Project Overview

Fable collection recalls the humble objects familiar to traditional children’s tales, and inspired by the idea that a woodsman has simply stepped outside and beautifully hand carved a collection of functional timber items.
These hand traditions have been reinterpreted, and designed for modern day function. Machined and crafted from solid oak and with difficult manufacturing details disguised within a super, simplified aesthetic.

Project Brief

“Think simple”
Fable comprises six essential utilities: a spoon, a bowl, a stool, a chair, a table and a storage cabinet.
Six essential elements pared back to bare original character.
Six simple elements brought to life through naritive and story.

'As we ‘grow up’, we get sophisticated out of enchantment and become too smart about things that cause children to wonder ... so I wanted to capture that charming world of childhood and recover its truths, its visions, its logic, its sense of time and space as a way out of the black and white world of adulthood.'

Project Innovation/Need

I like the idea of my furniture pieces being functional pets or working companions, and I like the idea that quality craftsmanship can embody a spirit and retain a soul within an intimate space.
Fable collection was intended to be viewed as 'ordinary' from one opinion and 'extraordinary' from another.

Design Challenge

The design challenge was to pare back the Fable pieces to bare essential form while retaining disiplined function and strong individual character.
To achieve this 'simplicity' the Fable collection incorporates difficult manufacturing proceedures and complex fabrication.

Sustainability

Fable is designed and pared back to essential form, without excess or decoration.
The range is manufactured using solid plantation oak and uses environmentally friendly glue.
Fable is quality fabricated and designed to last for generations.
